Spring is here and that means wet gear if you’re not careful. While we’re waiting for drier times we’ll be keeping our gear secure with the Canyon Weather Defense backpack. Over the winter this day pack was perfect for keeping our gear organized and close at hand in the wind and blowing snow and we look forward to using it in the seasonal rains we’re sure to be out and about enjoying. If you’re looking for something to carry supplies for a day on the slopes or some time in the woods spent looking for those first signs of spring, check out our review of this rugged Outdoor Products backpack.
Made with the water repellant Weather Defense™ fabric this durable pack is capable and comfortable. On first inspection we were impressed by how thick and tough the Weather Defense material is. This makes the pack stiffer than other packs but also lets the pack keep its shape and we felt like our gear was well protected by just this aspect alone.
At 19.6″ W x 12″ H x 5.9″ D we found this roomy pack had plenty of space for a change of clothes, snacks, hydration bladder and all of the other essential items we carry in our daily life. Multiple compression straps keep the load secure and give some options for strapping a wet jacket or other item to the outside. There are also multiple carabiner attachment points for a muddy pair of boots or for hanging a dry bag.
We haven’t experienced any leaks but we would like to see some sort of rubberized zipper for added peace of mind. That said, we found the zippers function very well, don’t hang or snag and are easy to zip and unzip. The generous pull tabs are easy to grip even with a heavy winter glove.
With daylight at a minimum this time of year, low light visibility is important and the Canyon delivers with a large, highly reflective strip across the lower bottom of the pack. It lights up bright when headlights or headlamps flash across it in the dark. Also, all of the compression straps and accents are high-vis yellow. There’s no missing it!
Inside the pack there are two compartments. One is for a hydration bladder though we found it held a laptop really well. The padded shoulder straps are very comfortable, fully adjustable and include a sternum strap. The part of the pack that rests on your back has two foam padded panels that add comfort. There is also an adjustable waist belt that adds stability.
On the outside is a handy exterior panel that zips away and features a built-in gear organizer. There are lots of options to keep the essentials like pens, wallet and keys so you don’t have to dig or unpack to find what you’re looking for. There are pouches on each side that have drawstrings for securing water bottles or whatever else you choose to store there.
